Finally- Real models

Brigitte Magazine (German Publication) has announed it will no longer use stick-thin models for its pages. It will now be using real women! It makes me want to learn how to read German. If only American publications woud follow suit. I think some of the credit can be given to the Sartorialist- the popularity of that blog has started a trend with less-polished models (or at least not air-brushed). The Advertising Age article also mentions that "a group of French politicians have introduced legislation demanding that magazines put warnings on airbrushed adverts and photo spreads to alert readers when an image has been retouched to change a person's physical appearance." Voila! Finally some traction on using women who look like women, not X-rays with nipples.

A few of my favorite...books

Dictionary of Textiles

One of my most treasured books is the Fairchild publication Dictionary of Textiles. I have the 7th edition which is chock-full of every textile known to man-kind and any stitch type, machine system and material that has ever been used in fashion.

The Dress Doctor

For any fashion devotee, another must read is "The Dress Doctor" by Edith Head. The Academy Award winning costume designer administers advice to regular women and the book is sprinkled with tidbits about dressing glamorous stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyk and Grace Kelly. I really appreciated her candor about the different stars' body types and how she either worked around the flaw or made a signature dress because of the perceived "flaw".

Barbara Stanwyk's signature style in "The Lady Eve" and the evening dress (that was a scandal at the time because it exposed her midriff) was the result of Edith visually "breaking up" Barbara's long torso. The take-away from this book is that a few tricks and glamour looks effortless.

Fashion Sites-Galore

BurdaStyle I signed up for BurdaStyle during last year's MakerFaire in Austin and I haven't been disappointed. Every other week I get updates from the nice folks and there are free patterns, how-to videos and ideas galore for making your own patterns and clothes. A definite must!

H&M H&M is a guilty pleasure that I don't get to indulge - except online. I think there may be a store in Houston- but I don't get to H-town very often. So, I slake my craving by viewing the video (Fashion Week NY, anyone?) and the affordable, cool buys.

Editor's Closet I signed up for an exclusive view of sample sales on a lark one day and have been so pleased by the offerings. It is free to sign up and the lovely email updates on Chloe, Versace, and various other cosmetics, jewelry and accessories is one of my true joys in life.

Sartorialist Okay, any fashion devotee worth their salt loves this blog. When I can't get out to people-watch- this is a total immersive pleasure. I love seeing regular, stylish folks in all their vestements. And the glamorous jet-setting makes me swoon.
