A few of my favorite...books

Dictionary of Textiles

One of my most treasured books is the Fairchild publication Dictionary of Textiles. I have the 7th edition which is chock-full of every textile known to man-kind and any stitch type, machine system and material that has ever been used in fashion.

The Dress Doctor

For any fashion devotee, another must read is "The Dress Doctor" by Edith Head. The Academy Award winning costume designer administers advice to regular women and the book is sprinkled with tidbits about dressing glamorous stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyk and Grace Kelly. I really appreciated her candor about the different stars' body types and how she either worked around the flaw or made a signature dress because of the perceived "flaw".

Barbara Stanwyk's signature style in "The Lady Eve" and the evening dress (that was a scandal at the time because it exposed her midriff) was the result of Edith visually "breaking up" Barbara's long torso. The take-away from this book is that a few tricks and glamour looks effortless.
